AWS RELIABLE SOLUTIONS FOR CHLORINE APPLICATIONS

The chlor-alkali industry produces basic commodity inorganic chemicals which are supplied to a wide range of final production industries, such as PVC manufacturing, sulphonation industries, textiles, pulp & paper and so on.

The production of these inorganic chemicals inevitably involves the production of emissions and that’s where AWS can help with its reliable and cost-saving solutions.

In this article you will find three different cases of chlor-alkali industries that relied on AWS FiberwindTM candles as the best solution for their WET chlorine line, DRY chlorine line and also HYDROGEN line.

APPLICATION: WET CHLORINE LINE

Process conditions:
  • Gas flowrate: 10.000 Nm3/h
  • Temperature: 65 °C

What needs to be filtered: Chlorine gas + salts + water

Technical solution:

AWS supplied the following FiberwindTM filter:

Screens and flanges
Screens and flanges are supplied in FRP Derakane 470 since this type of material is recommended in case of this specific aggressive environment.
An alternative material to FRP Derakane 470 could be Titanium.
The plane top flange is fully adaptable to any type of tower.

Filtering media
The candle is made of special glass fiber rope filtering media, where the entire filtration process happens.

APPLICATION: DRY CHLORINE LINE

Process conditions:
  • Gas flowrate: 12.000 Nm3/h
  • Temperature: 65 °C

What needs to be filtered: Chlorine gas + concentrated sulphuric acid mist

Technical solution:

AWS supplied the following FiberwindTM filter:

Screens and flanges
Screens and flanges are supplied in SS316L since this type of material is recommended in case of high concentrated H2SO4 mist.
The plane top flange is fully adaptable to any type of tower.

Filtering media
The candle filter is made of special glass fiber rope filtering media.

AWS ensure a long-lasting product, made with quality material and proper openings to improve the strength of the structure.
The wooden box is definitely the best way to safely transport the filter to the customer’s site.

APPLICATION: HYDROGEN LINE

Process conditions:
  • Gas flowrate: 13.000 Nm3/h
  • Temperature: 65 °C

What needs to be filtered: Hydrogen gas in alkali environment

Technical solution:

AWS supplied the following FiberwindTM filter:

Screens and flanges
The recommended material in case of hydrogen gas with NaOH solution is SS316L.
The plane top flange is fully adaptable to any type of tower.

Filtering media
In the photo you can see a candle that seems an exact copy of the previous candle, but it is not! The main difference is the filtering media: made of wrapped PP fiber, ensures higher reliability over time and better stability of the fiber bed.
Due to alkali environment, the special glass fiber cannot be used since it would be corroded.
